The Education Of Sonya Sotomayor

“Legislators and education officials have been paying more attention to the dropout problem since learning last year that more than 30 percent of high school students aren’t graduating. A report released in October by the Milton & Rose D. Friedman Foundation said students who drop out of school in a single year cost the state’s taxpayers 9 million annually in lost sales tax revenue and higher Medicaid and prison costs.

Regardless, the way forward for the GOP is clear. First, we need to challenge Democrats on their turf. The 43rd was as sure of a win for the Democrats as any. Yet, our campaign forced Senate Dems to make the 43rd a “firewall” district and spend M. The Democrats can’t spend M in every senate district. We need to remove the ability for them to consolidate their efforts in whatever district they choose. If we start a “fire” in every district, no matter the odds of winning, no district can become a “firewall” district. If this party had placed a quality candidate in every district, Bill Brady would be governor.

B. Make pre-service training longer. The student should observe for one year, teach for one year on his/her own, before allowing the student to graduate. A semester is not sufficient. It does not cover the whole gamut of teaching experience that will engender a love for it or a hatred for it. The student can then decide whether or not teaching is what he/she really wants to do.

These days, parents are afraid to redirect young people in their neighborhood because they do not know their neighbors and their is no sense of family. If you see something, say something. People close their doors and they don’t know the neighbor next door.

But for the rest of us who give a duck, we gotta start Negro education reform somewhere, and i do not think we are going to do it with the U.S. SecEd, Arne Duncan’s Race-to-the-Top game show. Let’s get down, dirty, and practical.

Consider outdoor skills to be part of your child’s healthy and complete upbringing. Learn to paddle a canoe, take a hike, go stargazing, use binoculars to see a bird. Listen to the sounds of the night, use a compass and a GPS.

Reading difficulty often leads to school failure. A recently-released study by the Annie E. Casey Foundation found that one in six children who are not reading proficiently in third grade do not graduate from high school on time, a rate four times greater than proficient readers.

Hard research confirms that reading to children may break this cycle and improve their chances of success in life. Reach Out and Read is a national school readiness organization that helps spread this crucial message. The program provides every child 6 months through 5 years old with a new, developmentally-appropriate children’s book to take home and enjoy. Our doctors and nurses speak with parents about the importance of reading aloud to their young children every day.
