Education Reform School

Regardless, the way forward for the GOP is clear. First, we need to challenge Democrats on their turf. The 43rd was as sure of a win for the Democrats as any. Yet, our campaign forced Senate Dems to make the 43rd a “firewall” district and spend M. The Democrats can’t spend M in every senate district. We need to remove the ability for them to consolidate their efforts in whatever district they choose. If we start a “fire” in every district, no matter the odds of winning, no district can become a “firewall” district. If this party had placed a quality candidate in every district, Bill Brady would be governor.

As I survey my Facebook wall, I am struck by the high percentage of my progressive friends who are fed up with the Democrats, fed up with Obama, and fed up with being yelled at for voting third party. Why, they wonder, can’t we have some candidates who actually espouse progressive values? Why can’t we propose real universal healthcare? Real Wall Street reform? Real education reform? In short. real progressive politics that reflect a secular government respecting the rights of all Americans?

Unfortunately, many parents are deluding themselves that the problems are “elsewhere”. The self-delusion that a schools is great simply because it’s situated in an expensive area, or because it is touted by the local residents, is self-defeating. Our best schools aren’t good enough and our best and brightest students are making miseable showings when they compete internationally.

They could have just said this: we will make everyone suffer and your children will forfeit their visit from Santa until you give us adults more money.

You are a good example. You drove to work a few days ago. Did you learn anything? Probably not. You did not try to accomplish anything novel. And, nothing novel happened. But, an unexpected highway closure either leads you to turn around and go home or (more likely) do something new. Then, small or large, something will be learned. Maybe you will learn those functions on your GPS that you never needed before. Or, maybe you will ask a very good looking business man for directions and find that all nice looking business men are not necessarily nice. New experiences are very good at emerging a new want. Wants lead to trying. And, trying leads to learning.

Since the widely aggressive campaigning for the passage of 3A 3B in Jefferson County has paid off, the influx of cash is being collected in raindeer barrels from the sky of plenty. On November 15, 2012, district staff, specific to the superintendent and her chief financial officer, were already making recommendations to the board of education to replenish reserves by to M, eliminating furlough days in which they touted as a 3% reduction in pay for the past two years (i.e. you don’t work you don’t get paid), and giving 1 % raises. What happened to the reasons they begged for the money in the first place?
