Jeanne Allen Stepping Down From The Center For Education Reform

Researchers are studying the issue. It’s clearly a national, even global trend. Studies show that kids who spend time outdoors are more psychologically healthy, mentally alert, and physically fit. A few studies have documented a rise in test scores after students spent time doing research outdoors in environmental topics. Others have shown that kids who are indoors more tend to be overweight more often (big surprise!), and have a higher incidence of psychological problems.

Is the government the Mom and dad now? I don’t think so! Get off your behinds a make the changes that need to be made. You will probably make more progress, in the long run, than the goverment. Their sometimes slow at getting things done.

The uncomfortable truth is that progressives in america cannot afford not to be activists. We no longer have the option of hoping that someone else will step to the plate. They won’t. It is up to us. If we lose this country to the right Wing Fascists, it won’t be because there are more of them than us. It will be because they are more active, more dedicated, and more financially supportive of their party than we are of ours. They have been the squeaky wheel for thirty years, and in that time, we have somehow failed to recognize the basic fact of politics: The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

I wrote about the education of Barak Obama, then a candidate. Let’s now look into Sonya Sotomayor’s education. Like Obama, she does not have a privileged background. Born and raised in the Bronx by immigrant parents, her father dies when she was 9. She goes to Blessed Sacrament School in Soundview, and then to parochial Cardinal Spellman High School in the Bronx. Just like Obama, Sotomayor is not a product of public school system.

And a big congrats to my friends at Hoosier Access and Capitol & Washington. They, along with Indiana Barrister, made the washington Post’s list of best state political blogs in the country. Indiana Barrister also made the list back in 2009.

For me, being greener starts with getting outside and actually enjoying this beautiful planet of ours. I worry that in today’s society, people are so focused on saving the planet that they forget to appreciate its beauty and teach children to know the Earth before we ask them to save it.

Back in the day, even teachers children attended the same schools. Teachers were icons in the community. We saw them at the grocery stores and downtown. We need to focus more on community as we move to education reform.

If you are like most progressive Americans, the answer is no. Maybe you’ve sent in five bucks here or there, or shared a clever Facebook post with all two thousand of your friends who have also not done a thing. The truth is, you haven’t done anything to try to move the Democratic party back to its more liberal roots. You haven’t even brought out your fiddle while your country burned. Until you have acted, I submit that you do not have the right to complain that the Democratic Party does not represent your values. If you haven’t given them a reason to listen to you, this mess is your fault.
